In 1878, when Rabindranath was seventeen years old, Satyendranath proposed to take Rabindranath to England. After Debendranath consented, Rabindranath went with Satyendranath to Ahmedabad where Satyendranath was a judge. In Ahmedabad Rabindranath stayed in an ancient palace by the Sabarmati river. Rabindranath used to walk around alone in the roof of this palace at night and there he wrote the first few songs for which he composed music. After spending six months in Ahmedabad and Bombay Rabindranath left for England on the 20th of September, 1878, when he was seventeen years and four months old. At that time Jnanadanandini was living in Brighton, Sussex with her children. Rabindranath stayed in her house for a while and attended a public school in Brighton. Jnanadanandini was likely the first Bengali woman who stayed independently in England with her children. Rabindranath's autobiography has a section entitled "Literary Companions". There he mentioned the names of only two as his literary companions when he started to compose poems: Biharilal Chakraborty and Kadambari. When "Bhanu Singha Thakurer Padabali" was published as a book, Rabindranath wrote in the dedication: You requested many times to publish the poems of Bhanu Singha, but I did not do it. Today I am publishing it, but you are not here to see it. Jyotirindranath played the piano and composed music. Rabindranath composed songs to go with the music.
