Mandarmani is on My Mind

Rabindranath Tagore in Prague, The Czech Republic, in 1921.

"Here I will mention a dream of mine as an example.
I lost my mother at an early age. My mother was not present
when I grew up. Last night I dreamt that I was still living
in my childhood. My mother was sitting in a room of a graden-home
on the bank of Ganges. If mother was there then she was there.
Her presence did not possess my awareness all the time.
Without paying any attention to mother I walked close to her room.
When I was in the hallway in a moment suddenly something happened -
in my mind a thought came up that mother was there.
Immediately I went to her room and saluted her by touching her feet.
She held my hand and said to me, "Oh, you have come!"

The dream ended at that point. I started to think.
I am living in mother's house. I am walking close to the door
of her room ten times. I know that there is no doubt that she is there.
But life goes on without taking her presence into account.
What is the harm? She has not closed the door of her kitchen.
She is serving food. Even when I am sleeping she is moving the hand fan.
The only thing that is not happening is for her to hold my hand
and say, "Oh, you have come!" Food, water, wealth, people -
everything is there. But where is that voice? Where is that touch?
When the mind completely wakes up, it wants that. And when it wants that
and does not get it, it looks around in rooms full of ingredients.
Then it loses all appetite for food and drink."

A part of an article entitled Inadequate Wealth.
Translated from Bengali.

"Nirud-desher pathik, aamai dak di-le ki -
Dekh-te tomai na jadi pa-e na-e ba dekhi.
Bhitar thea-ke ghu-chi-a di-le cha-wa pa-wa,
Bhabna-te mor la-gi-a di-le jharer ha-wa,
Bajrashikhai ak palo-ke mili-a di-le sada kalo."
