Mandarmani is on My Mind

Rabindranath Tagore with his wife Mrinalini

Satyendranath served as a judge in Karwar, Karnataka, for a while.
Rabindranath and his relatives visited him once in Karwar.

Karwar is surrounded by hills. The wide sandy beach of Karwar is next to a forest.
On the border of the forest, a small stream named Kalanadi flows through two hills
and disappears in the Arabian sea.

One evening Rabindranath went upstream on a small boat with his relatives.
He got off the boat at one place to visit a fort of Shibaji up in the hills.
Then he got back into the boat again.
The moon light shining on the silent forest, the hills and the narrow stream
created a magical scene. He got off again and went to a farmer's hut.
There he sat on a mat in the farmer's courtyard and had his dinner.
The return journey on the boat to the sea took a while.
After getting off the boat near the sea, he and his companions walked silently
towards his brother's house with their shadows making a dark impression
on the white sandy beach.

The beauty of nature is not an illusion of the human mind.
The joy of the unbounded is being expressed through the beauty of nature.
And that is why in presence of the beauty of nature we become oblivious of ourselves.
The beach in Karwar is a place to realize this concept.

The musical play Prakitir Pratishodh was written in Karwar.
In this play Rabindranath articulated the idea:
the large includes the small, the unbounded includes the bounded,
and freedom includes attachment.

On the return trip from Karwar, Rabindranath wrote some of the songs of
Prakitir Pratishodh. One day Rabindranath sat on the deck of the ship,
with total happiness in his mind sang and composed the first song:

    Hade go Nandorani-
Aamader   Shyamke chhere dao-
Aamra    rakhal balak goshte jabo,
      Aamader    Shyamake diae jao

After returning from Karwar Rabindranath got married. He was twentytwo at the time.
The bride was the daughter of a bailiff of the estates of the Tagores in central Bengal.
Her name was Mrinalini.

"Aamar Paran jaha chai
        Tumi ta-e, tumi ta-e go!
Toma chhara aar a jagate
Mor   keho na-e kichhu na-e go!

Jao     sukher sandhane jao

        Aar kichhu na-he cha-e go"
